Hello!
Thanks for stopping by our table at the Spring Involvement Fair on Tuesday! This email has some basic details about our team, so please read through! If you have questions or have further interest in joining our team for practices or races, please respond to this email and we'll get you started on the process to join the team! First up, what is Nordic skiing? Check out this video, which is probably the most famous video out there, of Jessie Diggins winning the first Gold Metal in the sport for Team USA back in 2018. That video is of skate skiing, and keep in mind that is at an Olympic level - we're a lot more tame. This video is the other kind of Cross Country Skiing, which is classic skiing. Cross Country skiing does NOT involve lifts, and we are strong athletes, which is the appeal for many people. For others, the appeal is just being outside and having an awesome community to do the sport with! After learning more, if you're still interested in Nordic skiing with our team, keep reading! CSU Nordic does consistent "dryland" practices once per week. These are in the evenings on one day per week. They typically involve some combination of runs, rollerskis, core workouts, upper and lower body plyometrics, and band-strengthening. Most of our team members enjoy working out with a group of people, which is why we do this! When we get snow in town, the City of Fort Collins grooms City Park 9 Golf Course, and we can ski there a bit. During the months of December, January, February, and March, we try and get up to Happy Jack Nordic (just East of Laramie) every couple of weekends to enjoy skiing. Your team dues pay for a season pass to Happy Jack, so you're welcome to ski there on your own too. We do occasionally teach Nordic to those that have never Nordic skied before. You are responsible for finding your own gear, and you can join for a trip to City Park 9 or Happy Jack, and one of our teammates would be happy to teach you the basics! For those trying Nordic for the first time, The Rec rents basic Classic Skis. For those that are experienced Nordic skiers, our student coaches would be happy to give you feedback on your technique to help you ski better! Our team has a pretty intensive travel season that runs from the start of the Spring Semester through Spring Break. We go to different parts of Colorado and Wyoming most of those weekends, where those that want to can race against other colleges from the area. For those that don't want to race, you are welcome to come on the trip and cheer for the racers and enjoy the skiing that our destination has to offer! We typically travel to Grand Mesa (Grand Junction), Leadville, Laramie, and Crested Butte. For those that want to race at a high level, you have the opportunity to travel to Nationals the week before spring break that alternates between New York and California. A couple final notes about travel weekends - each weekend has a fee associated with it that is less than $100, which covers gas, lodging, and food for the weekend. Whether this is your first time racing or you've been doing it for years, you're welcome to join us for a race! You're also welcome to just come hang out, cheer for the team, and ski around as you please. We have a saying on this team - you get out what you put in - if you choose to come to most of the travel weekends and race, you'll find a community of awesome Nordies! If you just want to come for a weekend or two, that's fine too! If that still sounds appealing, send us an email back, and we'll pass along some next steps! There's a $40 team dues that covers waxing costs and Happy Jack trail passes. You must have a Rec Membership at CSU to be a member of our team (Full Time CSU Students automatically pay for one). I think that about covers the basics. Our Nordic race season is in swing now, so if you're looking to join us for this spring, please reach out ASAP. We need to have you sign some forms and get signed up for trips and groupchats!

If you're at all like me, it might be the time of year that you're thinking about getting new Nordic Equipment!
For used stuff, check out ski swaps that'll happen in October/November in Summit and Grand Counties. Boulder Nordic, Devil's Thumb Nordic, Snow Mountain Ranch, Breckenridge Nordic, and Frisco Nordic usually have good ski swaps where you can get pretty sweet used gear for great prices! You can also check out thrift stores in places like Leadville, Steamboat Springs, and Summit County to see if you can find any steals! For new stuff, check out Boulder Nordic or OutThere Nordic- tell them that you're on the CSU Nordic Ski Team and they'll give you 15ish% off! You can also check out Breckenridge Nordic in the winter - they might give you some deals if you ask too! If you're overwhelmed with all the options and need some advice on what to get, send us an email and we'll be happy to help you out! Bottom line - keep calm and Nordic on! |
